I AM GLUTEN FREE

Eating out is still complicated, especially when the people you are dining with don't understand your dietary needs. Sometimes I am made to feel ashamed of my illness. It seems to embarrass some members of my family. This is very sad, and I'm struggling to deal with it. That is why it is important for Celiac's to have a support system. My Mother's day celebration would have been better if we ate at home or a restaurant with a designated gluten-free menu. I like this message card and I will keep a copy of it in my purse from now on. I know there are companies that you can purchase these cards from, but you can also make your own.

I have found that it helps to speak up about restaurants or to do some research before you go out or pick a restaurant. That way those who aren't supportive get a little "kick" from those who are supportive about which restaurants to choose.

Your immediate family could also just put their collective foot down too. You guys could choose not to go to any restaurant that doesn't offer something that you can eat. After all it was Mother's Day, and you are a Mother too. You deserve to have a special time too.

I think we have all had our moments with friends or family. Some folks just don't take change well.

Happy Mother's Day
